A tiny shrub of the family Mesembryanthemum with tuberous (caudex) roots, in which the plant stores moisture and nutrients. The root first develops in the soil, and then when transplanted, the plant is lifted above it, and it takes on the appearance of a bottle-shaped tree. Plants are excellent succulents for bonsai: while the young above-ground stems are still thin and soft, with proper pruning they can easily be shaped into a dwarf tree up to 20 cm tall. During the summer, several golden or orange flowers up to 7 mm wide open on the tops of the branches.
